Low Attendance Solution

Today was a very cold day in our portion of the Sunshine State.  In fact, at 11am we still haven’t reached 32°F.  Our current wind chill is 19°F.  Needless to say, many students stayed home.

Since my neighbor and I both teach the entire 7th and 8th grade student population, we decided to combine our efforts and keep the kids on track.

We were flying by the seat of our pants.  But a quick search of our resources brought us to an interesting site. Where we found web based app for Function Review.  http://www.mathplayground.com/functionmachine.html

The students that braved the weather “got the day off” from our curriculum.  We “played games” all class period.  By the end of each period, we had taught the kids how to predict the function from a t-chart.   We were even able to sneak in solving equations that required you to divide by a variable.  (4=2/x)

The reward came as we saw 100% engagement in our classes today.  The meaningful conversations made us grin with excitement.  And the phrase, “Can we do this again? It was fun.” was heard from more than one student.  We took what we thought would be a wasted day and completely turned it around.

I don’t think this will be the end of our combined efforts.
