A Whole New World

I’ve been given an amazing opportunity.  A blank slate.  As we speak, a new computer lab is being installed at my school.  I will be leading students through the world of IT for the first time on our campus.  I am excited, nervous, and generally insecure about how to impart the knowledge it has taken me over 20 years to gain.

There are 5 new courses in my 6 classes.  I will be teaching every grade level on my 6-12 campus.  I can’t wait to see where the kids lead me.  Genius hour will be worked into each of my classes.  I am certain that these projects are the key to showing my students that passion for your learning is not only exciting, but necessary for success.

I am also starting every class with a Digital Citizenship unit.  It is important to me that I can trust my students to know right from wrong.  I have decided that commonsensemedia.org has excellent programs already adapted for my different age groups.

One of my classes will be responsible for producing a daily video for the morning announcements at my school.  We will need to hit the ground running once school starts.  I plan to utilize YouTube to store our videos.  Right now, we have a laptop with a webcam.  I am on the lookout for grants and donations to increase the amount of equipment we have.  I have a grand goal of one day producing live broadcasts during the school sporting events.

Another class is a Game and Simulation Foundations.  I have several students interested in this class.  We will be producing games and simulations for the various departments on our campus.  The passion these few students have already shown has been amazing. I can’t wait to see what they do when we get together in the fall.

My primary goal for all of these classes is to provide my students a place to follow their passion.  Let’s use the tools I’ve been given to expand our horizons and show the world that, though we are small, there is nothing we can’t do.
