Today was my 41st day of school. I was 5 when I entered kindergarten. I’ve started school in one fashion or another every August since then. As an educator, today was my 24th first day of school. Each one of those firsts has been unique. There hasn’t been one that started without butterflies.
This year I began gamifying my classes. I spent today explaining the process. I don’t have it all finished. I explained it. They loved it! If today is any indication, I am going to love this gamifying “stuff”.
I call my classroom “The Vortex”. When I say it, I deepen my voice and I have a quick hand slide. Now I have the students saying it the same way.
Points are being awarded today. More will be awarded tomorrow. I can’t wait to enter “The Vortex” again.

Today, I went deeper in explaining “The Vortex”. I showed the students my website and we started setting up our leaderboards. Their excitement is catching. Students are talking about my classes. Parents are signing up for the variety of accounts we will be using in my class this year. I am totally exhausted but, it’s a good tired.

Today we began adjusting to the fact that our computers aren’t here yet. I will be using one of the General Purpose Labs for a few days. We began setting up our file systems. Students began understanding the power of networks as I explained the importance of saving to their “Z” drive. There were a few kinks. Some didn’t yet have internet permissions. Some had trouble remember their usernames. Everyone was focused on making a go of it.

All of my classes were in the General Purpose Lab today. Watching everyone get excited about Edmodo was thrilling. I have tons of points to enter this weekend. Leaderboards will be updated by Monday morning. I hope the kids are still as excited as I am.
